ESSRs and ARCPs

The Educational Supervisor's Summary Report (ESSR) is generated by the resident and needs to be submitted by the ES to the College Tutors > 2 weeks prior to the ARCP date. This means the ES needs to have reviewed it prior to this deadline, so consider this when prompting the resident to send it to you!

Residents need to nominate a College Tutor in their Lifelong Learning Portfolio. ESSRs will then be handled by this College Tutor.

Please encourage residents with surnames beginning A-M to nominate Tim Howes, and those beginning N-Z to nominate Kate O'Connor.

Guide to writing the ESSR

The ESSR is a summary of activity and achievements since the last ARCP. The onus is on the resident to complete it and they should be encouraged to do the majority - your role is to comment on the evidence they have provided.

Feedback from recent panels has raised the following requests:

  • Please provide an accessible logbook summary

  • Focused, distilled summaries of activity are preferred over lengthy generic prose

  • Strategic analysis for the next year:

    • HALOs needed & planning for this

    • Stage of training requirements still to be achieved

    • Remedial areas you have identifed

    • Future planning (SIA ambitions)

    • SuppoRTT

Elements to be included by the learner

  • Summary of activity since last ARCP: year of training, hospital placement, exam achievements

  • HALOs achieved: current and completed since your last ARCP, what remains outstanding for this stage of training.

  • Logbook: the Educational Supervisor needs to comment on this year’s/career logbook numbers in the written text specifically as the panel do not have time to search for these individually. They should include both career totals (by specialty) and year-to-date

  • Comment on what you have used your EDT for

  • Comment on what you have used your study leave for

  • Form R : include documentation of periods of absence

  • Up-to-date date CV

  • Wider scope of practice form - If you have done any work outside your training post (voluntary/paid): link to form on  https://severndeanery.nhs.uk/about-us/revalidation/show/documents-and-guidance

  • Please include:

    • QIPs

    • Presentations

    • Teaching and Education

    • Management

    • Research

    • Courses attended and training days

    • Future plans or requirements

Portfolio Pathway

Requirements and process as for NTN residents (i.e. as above!)

Clinical Fellow

You need an annual appraisal using the FourteenFish system - https://www.fourteenfish.com/

You need to ask the Trust Appraisal and Revalidation team (Revalidation@nbt.nhs.uk) to be set up on FourteenFish. The relevant intranet page is found here

You need to identify someone to appraise you - there is a list of current appraisers on the intranet - Trust Appraisers. Once they have agreed to appraise you, list them as your appraiser on FourteenFish and set an agreed date for your appraisal.

When asked for your scope of work in FourteenFish, enter a simple single-line description e.g. Provision of anaesthetic services and on-call commitments as a Clinical Fellow

The process is as follows:

  • Use your LLP as normal, then create an ESSR on the LLP

  • Complete one MSF and one MTR

  • Complete a version of Form R

  • Upload all of the above to FourteenFish
